At the Airport…
By Katy

I am sitting inside an airport right now, writing to you, dear readers. I can’t tell you where I am, but I can tell you that it doesn’t have free wi-fi. How is this possible? I think that in this day and age, there should be free wi-fi everywhere. I think I heard a rumor awhile back that Google wanted to do that someday. I think that day should be today. Flying has already become a major chore since September 11th. Airlines have lost a lot of money, so instead of trying to lure customers back with incentives, they have passed along their costs to us. Checking in bags costs money. Airplane food, never very good, also costs money. And wireless at this airport also costs money? Come on! I think the best way to re-gain customers is to make the flying experience as pleasant as possible, not as painful as possible. Seats should be more comfortable. Good food options should be available in the terminals and on board. And getting online to do some work should be…free!

I feel your frustration. I used to get free internet at the Delta Shuttle terminal at LaGuardia Airport, but then a few years ago, they silently did away with the computer terminals (and my wifi). When the computers came back, they charged you dearly for the internet, which meant that unless I had a Blackberry, I could not check my work e-mail for free.
What gets my goat the most is how much they charge for a bottle of water once you pass security. My way to combat that? Bring in an empty bottle, and fill it up once you’ve passed security.

I hear ya! I’ve wasted a lot of bottles by not being able to drink it all. It’s redic. I think they should just make you drink some of it so you can bring it in. Airplane air is sooo drying, and I really need a lot of water. I think it’s cruel to not allow people to bring their own water AND charge people an exorbitant amount of money to buy water past the security checkpoint.

I can’t believe they charge for that! I clearly don’t get out much. But you’re so right. I used to love traveling, now I see it as a giant pain in my arse. All because of the insanity at the big airlines. Southwest, though, still rocks my world! Yay Dallas! Katy, this is the longest we’ve ever gone without talking. Parts of my brain are rotting. Call me soon!

Yes Southwest doesn’t charge for bags, but the terminal it’s in probably charges for wi-fi. Can you believe that I had to pay $8 for the wi-fi just so I could write up that post and do some work? I will definitely call you soon…I may have a couple of days where I’m going to be free soon. Miss you!!!
